To land the seasoned yet still very talented point guard, Chris Paul, the LA Clippers are in the best position, and the most important factor is something they have no control over. Paul has a desire to finish his career in Los Angeles, and fortunately, the Clippers have just built their home stadium in Inglewood, California.
However, the Clippers are not in a league by themselves. The Los Angeles Lakers, led by LeBron James and Luka Dončić, have also taken the basketball scenery in one of the most prominent states by storm. This would be another perfect destination for Paul to join and possibly finish his career.
Additionally, within one of 'The Stein Line' latest, the Dallas Mavericks will also be pursuing Paul, and although they are far from Los Angeles, they have a promising role to offer at point guard in one of the most financially-beneficial states in the country.
That said, what gives the Clippers the edge over both of their competitors? Is it their brand-new facility? The fact that they already have connections with Paul? Or is it something the Lakers, in particular, cannot offer the veteran guard this summer?
The Los Angeles Lakers may be a top destination for Chris Paul, but they likely do not belong in the race due to their limited opportunity
Between the three most realistic suitors in the NBA, the two teams with the most to offer in terms of a role are the LA Clippers and the Dallas Mavericks. Both teams need point guard help, and LA has a bench role, while Dallas has a starting spot open until Kyrie Irving returns.
The Lakers are ranked third due to the presence of LeBron James, Luka Dončić, and Austin Reaves in the mix. They also have Gabe Vincent and Shake Milton on the bench, who are two additional guards head coach JJ Redick loves to utilize.
As far as money goes, the Clippers are likely open to offering Paul, who did not sit for a single game this season, the mid-level exception. This is the right move, as although he is among the oldest (40), his production has not declined significantly, with averages of 8.8 points and 7.4 assists in 2024-25.
All in all, the Lakers may be campaigning for Paul, but they do not have his desired opening, which makes a reunion with the Clippers significantly more likely in the coming weeks.
