In a recent podcast he was invited to, Nicolas Batum, a long-time favorite for LA Clippers fans worldwide, announced that retirement is coming very soon, and could be his next chapter after the upcoming 2025-26 regular season.
This news is startling, as Batum just had a wonderful postseason for a 36-year-old seasoned veteran. In fact, the French Knight averaged 5.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in seven games, shooting 39.4% from three-point territory. He was also the blocks leader of the first-round battle between the Clippers and Denver Nuggets.
Holding on to Batum is more of a need than a want, as he aids LA in other ways than drilling clutch three-pointers and forcing tough contests. He is the voice of head coach Tyronn Lue's championship squad, and he goes out of his pay grade to build relationships with rookies, leading to progress in skill development.
However, the news of a celebratory retirement for Batum was to be expected as he had previously considered the idea. He ended up sticking around in the NBA, and the Clippers were glad, given his paramount excellence.
In his 17-year career, Batum impacted the Clippers and other teams, such as the Portland Trail Blazers, Charlotte Hornets, and Philadelphia 76ers. Fans will always hear his name and call him one of France's greats and history's most legendary role players.
The LA Clippers must have a plan for when Nicolas Batum's playing days are over
Indirectly, Nicolas Batum confirmed he is playing at least one more season in the NBA. He has a $4.9 million player option for next season, which he will likely soon accept and deem his last as a professional.
If Batum opts out, it will likely be for an extra penny. This is fair, as five million is considered cheap for the reputation he has achieved on every foot out of ninety-four.
Furthermore, executive Lawrence Frank must be willing in meetings and offer a check that requires the fan favorite to decide how much money he should receive.
Conversely, a massive meeting would need to be held to decide who the Clippers will hire in his role. Not just any two-way wing will fit, as LA needs the same attitude and mentality Batum brought in his replacement.
That said, Batum's retirement will bring Clipper Nation a moment of happiness, but sadness and emotion will accompany everything he did for LA in two separate stints.
