The Los Angeles Clippers will have a coaching vacancy. Mike Woodson will not be returning to the team’s bench for the 2018-19 season.
Well, there has been a coaching change for the Los Angeles Clippers, but it may not be the one you want. Mike Woodson will not return to the Clippers this season, per Adrian Wojnarowski.
Woodson’s departure, according to Woj, will allow the Clippers to bring in a defensive minded coach. Doc has always been more offense oriented and is fine letting his assistants handle the defensive side, as evidenced in Boston during their championship run with Tom Thibodeau.
It’s possible that Sam Cassell will just move up to the top assistant spot, but the team will do their due diligence and interview around the league.
With Doc Rivers in talks of a contract extension, he will obviously have a huge say in the coach that is brought in. This season, Doc earned Coach of the Year votes for his effort in keeping the Clippers in playoff contention while suffering through injuries and trading their star players.
With the team’s makeup uncertain for next season, Doc may have a lot of work on his plate. Having the right assistant by his side will do wonders.
With the 2018 NBA Draft Lottery also occurring, today has become a big day in Clippers’ news. Since this news is just breaking, there are no front runners for the job just yet. Keep checking back here with us for any possible updates regarding the new vacancy.
We’ll miss that goatee.
