Tonight, on NBA TV, the LA Clippers play their first home matchup of the season versus the Los Angeles Lakers, known as ‘The Battle of L.A.’ Tyronn Lue’s job has seemed safe, but Clippers’ insider, Law Murray, reported mid-day yesterday that if competitiveness is not seen, Steve Ballmer could announce the matter at hand.
Why does Ballmer reportedly feel like the long-awaited moment is now? After 21 losses and one that has already occurred to the Lakers, why is the wealthy team owner eying up tonight’s contest as Lue’s last straw?
It is simple; the Battle of L.A. is a packed-out event at the Intuit Dome, with a tension-filled history that matches Ballmer’s spirit and demeanor to the tee. It would be embarrassing on his part if the seats are full, ‘The Wall’ is energetic, and the crowd is cheering, just for his Clippers to put up a sorrowful fight against LeBron James and Luka Doncic.
Tyronn Lue may struggle to maintain a competitive mentality within his players
Steve Ballmer’s adrenaline and excitement blossom faster than any owner or executive in the sports industry. He strives for winning nights, and Law Murray’s report hints that tonight is Tyronn Lue’s opportunity to vindicate Ballmer’s trust.
However, the LA Clippers are on a five-game losing streak, and were on another five-game losing streak before they defeated the Atlanta Hawks; that is a record of 2-10 over the last 12.
Lue can try to urge his players to stay in the game and be motivated by all the fans rooting for them, but it is not that simple for the head coach, as many of the players are absent-minded and not mentally present.
Additionally, the statistics say the Los Angeles Lakers will win. They average more points, rebounds, and assists, while shooting better from the field and beyond the arc. On the contrary, the circumstances, like wins against short-handed teams, could give the Clippers the benefit of the doubt.
Ballmer will be upset and emotionally hurt if LA loses, and the team will officially stand as 15th in the Western Conference, given the New Orleans Pelicans are on a three-game win streak, won Thursday night, and do not play again until Monday.
That said, Ballmer has every right to slam the door and provoke the firing of Lue. It is an irreversible call that must be made, especially if a last chance was granted that did not come to fruition.
