Between Brook Lopez starting on the LA Clippers from day one, Yanic Konan Niederhauser recovering, and optimism around Baba Miller’s contributions, there aren’t a ton of expectations surrounding Isaiah Jackson. In the eyes of many, Jackson is simply viewed as someone who’s there to provide depth and assist the Clippers’ frontcourt when needed, in whatever way he can.
However, the truth is the Clippers will need a lot more from Jackson. Why? Well, he is the only center on the roster with the perfect combination of youth, production, and experience, making him the go-to guy for Tyronn Lue to replace Lopez in the starting five with, which could happen sooner rather than later.
Additionally, Jackson will be just as important when Niederhauser returns. The fan-favorite sophomore will need time to ramp up after not having played regular-season basketball in months, and the 24-year-old will be right there, ready to make an impact.
Isaiah Jackson could quickly become the starter for the Clippers
On day one, though it hasn’t been officially announced, Brook Lopez starting for the LA Clippers is a given. Is it the right choice? Maybe, maybe not. But, like last season, it is inevitable for Lopez’s flaws to come to light, and when they do, Isaiah Jackson will take his job with no hesitation.
That’s definitely a good thing, as Jackson does many things well on both ends of the court.
Offensively, Jackson is one of the better role-playing finishers in the league. He’ll score points at a high level on a low shot volume, and hustles like there’s no tomorrow on the glass for second chances.
For context, in 17 games with the Clippers last season, Jackson averaged 7.5 points and shot 76.4% from the field in just 15.9 minutes.
On the other end, there’s as much to like. Jackson is relentless in using his strength and athleticism to prevent baskets while boxing out effectively. This explains how he averaged 1.2 blocks per game and 4.6 rebounds for the Clippers.
Off the court, Jackson will be used to help Baba Miller and Yanic Konan Niederhauser. Both guys have little to no experience, and coming from a guy that’s been to the NBA Finals, they can learn a lot.
That said, Jackson will have a heavy role for the Clippers next season. He might start on the bench, but in no time he will be called up to fill in for Lopez in the starting lineup.
