Throughout the last decade or so, the LA Clippers have had some pretty iconic Sixth Man of the Year winners. There was the unforgettable Jamal Crawford, who gave us non-stop highlights we still look back on, and, of course, Lou Williams, a player who dominated for LA and, to some, is widely regarded as one of the greatest Clippers in franchise history. But alongside those two is Montrezl Harrell. He won the award in 2019-20 at age 26.
Once his contract expired, the Clippers let him walk away. Since then, Harrell bounced around the league, made a presence overseas for countries like China and Australia, and became one of the faces of the “BIG3” basketball league. Now, after several ventures, reports say that he is attending open tryouts held by the Houston Rockets’ G League affiliate, the RVG Vipers, hoping to make the team.

For context, Harrell has history with the Vipers. He played for them in 2015-16, which was his rookie season after he had been picked by the Rockets 32nd overall in the second round.
Montrezl Harrell absolutely deserves to be on an NBA roster
Based on what has been seen from the “BIG3,” as well as overseas, Montrezl Harrell hasn’t lost much of a step in his game. Sure, the level of competition may be different than the NBA, but Harrell is still a beast in the paint, can crash the glass extremely well, and has even added a three-point shot to his game.
Just look at some of Harrell’s current averages: 26.8 points (51.2% shooting from the field), 10.8 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks.
For what it’s worth, Harrell leads the “BIG3” in points, rebounds, and blocks averages. Mind you, this league includes many former NBA veterans and superstars like Dwight Howard, Michael Beasley, Lance Stephenson, and James Johnson.
That said, given his continued dominance on the court and the fact that he is just 32 and in excellent shape, teams across the league could use his talent and experience. The Clipper legend has been out of the NBA for one too many years, and that must change immediately.
Additionally, based on what is known about Harrell as a leader, he can make a night-and-day difference in the locker room, especially when adversity hits.
There is simply nothing a team that needs a quality big man could lose by signing Harrell to a prove-it deal.
