Door just swung wide open for Clippers to move on from big man who never fit

Behind star big man Ivica Zubac, the LA Clippers have faced countless struggles at the backup center position. They went through trial and error with talents like Moses Brown and Mason Plumlee, but they never panned out as a long-term solution for head coach Tyronn Lue.

In the offseason, fans hoped the team found their answer with Mo Bamba, a former first-round pick. He appeared to be an excellent fit, as he could stretch the floor and swat shots at the rim. His size and skill seemed to have complemented Zubac’s interior dominance.

Conversely, the front office did not take long to realize Bamba’s imperfections on the court. Over time, he became nearly unplayable, forcing Zubac to play extended minutes on the floor.

Although the Croatian star has thrived, the pressure Zubac has placed on his body is unsustainable. In addition, there is no room for injuries, especially with the history of franchise superstar Kawhi Leonard. As a result, the front office will have to replace Bamba before it is too late.

One way or another, the LA Clippers must move on from Mo Bamba as soon as possible.

As the LA Clippers are in the mix of competing for a title, the front office should look to ship Mo Bamba at the trade deadline. Even if the return is minimal, executive Lawrence Frank must prioritize fit above all else.

Through 17 games off the bench, Bamba is averaging 3.7 points and 3.7 rebounds, shooting 40.7% from the field. These numbers are disappointing, especially considering the expectations fans held when he was signed in July.

Off the eye test, Bamba can shoot three-pointers but faces challenges navigating around the rim. This is where the Clippers need him most, as Zubac brings one of the best interior presences in the league. If he is unable to back up the starting center, there is no point in holding on past the deadline.

Contract-wise, Frank was smart to sign Bamba on a one-year deal. He was tasked with proving himself on a title contender and failed in a guaranteed role off the bench. If the front office does not find a trade partner, he will likely enter free agency in the summer of 2025.

Nonetheless, Bamba’s future in Intuit Dome will likely come to an end. He can be a great center for another franchise, but due to fit, the Clippers’ front office must find a replacement.
