Earlier in the summer, the LA Clippers made a trade with the Philadelphia 76ers that has flown under the radar: cash considerations for Johni Broome and a second-round pick (later used to acquire Max Strus). For the Clippers, it was a smart move that added depth at center, which may have helped during Yanic Konan Niederhauser's recovery, while the 76ers shed the salary they needed.
However, before he even begins his tenure with the Clippers, the front office might end up parting ways with Broome. Why? LA has 17 players on standard contracts, two above the limit, and according to Jake Weinbach, unless there is another trade, the Auburn product is a potential cut candidate.
That’s certainly unfortunate, as many Clippers fans all over the world were excited to see what Broome brought to the table. He was the 35th overall pick in 2025, and could easily spread his wings in a change of scenery.
There is no room on the Clippers roster for Johni Broome
Although his rookie season didn’t pan out the way most hoped, Johni Broome is still an exceptionally talented big man. Broome has great touch, a solid feel for the game, the ability to make plays for his teammates, and a specialty in protecting the rim.
Anyone who watched Broome in his Auburn days, or even kept an eye on him throughout the pre-draft process, knows he has a bright future. The 24-year-old just needs the right situation around him.
That wasn’t the Philadelphia 76ers, because their primary focus is winning a championship, and it might not even be the Clippers, because there simply isn’t enough space.
Despite the contributions he can provide, there is realistically no one else for the Clippers’ front office to move on from. As the Kawhi Leonard trade has officially gone through, the depth chart is pretty much set.
And, if Broome thought he was alone, he isn’t. Weinbach added that Cam Christie, a former second-round pick the Clippers had been extremely high on since he was drafted and tried developing over the years, is also someone the front office may cut to meet the NBA’s standard-contract requirement.

Cam Christie, who has a non-guaranteed deal, and Johni Broome, who was recently acquired from the Sixers, could be potential cuts barring another trade.
This is just the business of the game. Broome will definitely get picked up by someone else relatively soon, whether that’s before the regular season begins or months down the line when a team needs help in the midst of a crisis.
