With the lack of experience the LA Clippers have at the center position, excluding Brook Lopez, they need depth. Isaiah Jackson has flaws, Yanic Konan Niderhauser won’t be back until hopefully December, and Jamarion Sharp, who was signed to the roster last week, is inexperienced in a legitimate role on an NBA team.
As a result, the Clippers’ front office made a smart, buy-low move with the Philadelphia 76ers. They traded cash considerations for Johni Broome and a 2027 second-round pick.
This deal adds a collegiate standout, who also dominated the G-League, to the Clippers, as well as more draft capital, while putting the 76ers in position to stay under the first apron following the signings of LeBron James and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
Johni Broome could see minutes early in the season for the Clippers
During the 2025 draft process, Johni Broome is one of the centers who had a workout for the LA Clippers. Though they ended up selecting Yanic Konan Niederhauser, which was most definitely the right choice, Broome making his way to the Clippers a year later is a full-circle moment for LA. In the same breath, it’s easy to see why the deal went through, as Lawrence Frank had his eye on him before his professional career began.
For the Philadelphia 76ers, behind one of the best centers in the league when healthy in Joel Embiid, Broome picked up some valuable experience. He also spent time in the G-League and had some miraculous performances, like the time he racked up 50 points and 17 rebounds on five made three-pointers versus the College Park Skyhawks.
Now, with the Clippers, everything he learned as a rookie will come in handy. And, to be quite frank, Broome might be involved in the lineup from day one.
While the 24-year-old former second-round pick is a bit undersized, he can stretch the floor, understands how to box out to grab contested boards consistently, and has a relentless motor on both sides of the ball.
Those are some traits that cannot be taught at the highest level, and attributes head coach Tyronn Lue will need off the bench right as the season opens.
Of course, Clipper Nation will learn more during training camp. Yet, on paper, the addition of Broome looks excellent, and the front office didn’t have to let go of any real assets in the process outside a bit of cash.
