If you’ve been following the LA Clippers’ roster leading up to media day, which is just ahead, you would know the front office is due for parting ways with multiple players to meet the NBA’s requirement of 15 standard contracts. Cam Christie, along with a few others, has been one of the prime candidates who are surely talented, but don’t align with the team’s current wants and needs.
Well, the Clippers’ front office began the roster crunch by waiving Johni Broome, the 35th overall pick in the 2025 draft and an offseason acquisition made through a trade with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Given that Broome’s chances of making the 15-man roster were slim because the Clippers have plenty of players at the center position, his being waived at this point in the summer works out in his favor. He now has plenty of time to sign a training camp deal or standard contract elsewhere.
Johni Broome deserves a real opportunity ahead of the upcoming regular season
Sure, there are athleticism concerns with Johni Broome, which he made loud and clear during the pre-draft process and through his rookie season with the Philadelphia 76ers, but he still has a lot to offer on both sides of the ball at this stage of his career.
Offensively, he has great touch around the rim, a high IQ, and the ability to create for others despite being a big man.
On the other end of the floor, Broome is a rock-solid rim protector, glass cleaner, and someone who is driven by an unstoppable motor.
Those extra-effort and gritty plays that not many players, especially big men, make nowadays? Yes, Broome takes pride in them, and it’s actually one of his best attributes.
Additionally, Broome’s G-League stats for the Delaware Blue Coats, where he averaged 19.3 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 1.8 assists, are definitely worth taking into account, as they offer a good bit of insight into what he brings to the table.
As for his flaws outside of athleticism, like shooting, they can be fixed in the right environment under a strong developmental staff. He’s only 24, with time on his side.
It’s unfortunate Broome’s days with the Clippers were numbered, but all things considered, it’s clear he deserves an opportunity somewhere else.
Nobody has to offer him anything crazy, but just something where he can really show what he’s made of on both ends of the court.
Trust me, there’s real value in Broome, and it’ll be worth a small investment.
