On Monday evening, the LA Clippers dismantled the short-staffed Miami Heat, 109-98, after once trailing by double-digits in the first quarter. This game was much-needed for the Clippers, as they had previously lost two in a row, and brings positive news following the tragic Los Angeles wildfires.
Though franchise superstar Kawhi Leonard continued to express advancement, he still needs time to perform where the Clippers need him to be. The two-time champion finished with six points, five rebounds, and two steals in 21 minutes of playing time.
Leonard’s co-star, James Harden, flamed the Heat on each offensive phase, finishing with 26 points and 11 assists in 37 minutes. When asked about Leonard’s return in the postgame conference, Harden stated, “It’s great. Obviously, he's just working his way into conditioning-wise, playing-wise, floater game, all of the above.”
Furthermore, Harden mentioned how the two-time champion missed training camp and added that the goal is to “make his job a lot easier.” Conversely, the former MVP can relate to the struggles of missing pre-season activities, as he was traded after the 2023-24 regular season began.
Despite the positive energy being spread within the locker room, head coach Tyronn Lue made a bold bold decision by not playing the two-way wing, Terance Mann. When Lue was asked about it after the win, he gave a vague response. This could mean something more later in the year.
Terance Mann’s recent DNP for the LA Clippers could signal a trade in the near future.
Once Terance Mann returned from a finger injury, Tyronn Lue quickly tried to utilize him when needed. This was all the former second-rounder needed to hear, as he posted 12 points on 100% shooting in his first game in over a month.
However, Lue continued to decrease Mann’s playing time, even after seeing breakthrough on both ends of the court. On the two-game road trip to Minnesota and Denver, he played a combined 22 minutes, and the Clippers lost both games.
After marking Mann as a healthy DNP over Miami, Lue was asked about his decision. He responded, “I just wanted to see something.” These words hold significant value, especially considering the front office’s choice to extend Mann in the summer.
That said, executive Lawrence Frank could explore trade options if Lue deems it necessary. This could be a better option than being patient, as Mann has been a liability for the Clippers this season.
