In the event Bennedict Mathurin does end up departing from the LA Clippers in a sign-and-trade, head coach Tyronn Lue’s rotation will have a massive sixth-man role empty off the bench. And, to be quite honest, on the market, there aren’t a lot of fits the Clippers’ front office can look to. But, when scrolling through the long list of unrestricted free agents, one comes to mind, and it’s shocking he’s still unsigned.
Four-year NBA veteran Brandon Williams would replace Mathurin like a glove. Additionally, he fits the youth motive the Clippers’ front office has been trying to capitalize on at just 26 years old, and may even sign for a discounted figure.
Granted, Williams is certainly not the perfect player out of the backcourt. the same breath, neither was Mathurin. He, too, had a number of flaws that became evident during his half-season with LA.

With teams like the New Orleans Pelicans and Chicago Bulls showing interest in Bennedict Mathurin, per a report from Shams Charania, there’s a good chance the LA Clippers don’t get as good of a scorer as the 23-year-old former lottery pick in return.
That’s okay though; all they have to do is sign Brandon Williams to the squad, and just like that, problem solved.
For the Dallas Mavericks in 2025-26, Williams had the best season of his career, averaging 13.0 points, 3.9 assists, and 2.9 rebounds while shooting 47.2% from the field at just six-foot-one.
That’s absolutely ridiculous to be scoring at a high level, efficiently, at the size he’s at. He’s clearly mastered the art of dribbling the basketball, getting to his sweet spots, and playmaking when needed.
The only true weaknesses around his skill set are three-point shooting and defense.
Those two are some of the most important parts of the game, especially for a point guard, but with the right lineup surrounding Williams, they can easily be masked.
In a potential contract, the Clippers don’t even have to sign Williams for long. It can easily be a short-term prove-it deal, and next summer, based on how he performed, the front office can act accordingly.
Nonetheless, among the remaining free agents, Williams stands out as the player who could fill in for Mathurin. The Clippers simply have to realize it before it’s too late, as there’s no way the regular season begins and he’s still not on a team.
