To put it in simple terms, the LA Clippers need Bennedict Mathurin. Initially, that may seem like a reach, which is fair, considering how his final stretch of the 2025-26 regular season panned out. However, Mathurin brings a special type of scoring off the bench and applies the utmost pressure on the rim, while also getting to the charity stripe at a high level. These three characteristics are rare, and to top it off, he is only 23 years old.
However, according to Jake Fischer of ‘The Stein Line,’ the Clippers are considering signing and trading Mathurin elsewhere. This is a decision that will come back to bite them if they go through with it, as Tyronn Lue’s second unit will struggle in many areas, especially the scoring department.
While the Clippers hope to retain Bennedict Mathurin, sources say Los Angeles — like Denver with Payton Watson — would be willing to partake in sign-and-trade scenarios that deliver Mathurin elsewhere.

So, all things considered, it’s in the Clippers’ best interest to retain Mathurin. He’s not the type of player that grows on trees, and more importantly, the former lottery pick was a crucial part of the Ivica Zubac trade to the Indiana Pacers.

Looking at the LA Clippers’ current roster, who on the bench can really contribute on the offensive side of the ball at all three levels? There is a defensive playmaker in Kris Dunn, a proven three-point shooter in Kobe Sanders, and a role-playing scorer in Jordan Miller, but no one with the ability to rise to the occasion on any given day.
Well, Bennedict Mathurin is the perfect example of a player who can check in the game from the second unit and instantly produce like a star.
It was a true luxury to have him on the team following the deadline, as he finished with averages of 17.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists for LA in 26 games. In between, Mathurin scored 38 points against the Denver Nuggets and did his best to help keep the season alive with 23 in the play-in tournament, which were two of the many showings Clipper Nation got, where they realized “this kid is legit.”
That said, losing Mathurin would tremendously hurt the Clippers’ chances of making any sort of noise they’re hoping for in the Western Conference.
He is that good, and with some more development on both sides of the court, there is no doubt that Mathurin could become one of the next All-Stars for the Clippers.
