Once superstar Paul George curated the LA Clippers’ first Western Conference Finals run in history, fans were convinced their current roster would inevitably make the NBA Finals. In moments of success, these beliefs were defensible, as George led the league in multiple categories throughout the 2021 postseason.
Furthermore, the front office trusted George and his abilities to remain healthy, with high hopes leading up to the regular season finale. In the end, the nine-time all-star only showed up for one more postseason, making it evident that the spark in his game was fading with age and injury.
Through six games against the Mavericks in 2024, George posted 19.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 4.8 assists, shooting 41.1% from the field on 15.8 shot attempts. Although these numbers seem average, they are inflated due to inconsistent performances.
Moreover, George had multiple outings that backed up his reputation of being a sub-par playoff riser. One of his worst occurred in game three, where he scored seven points in 30 minutes on 3-11 shooting. Additionally, the two-way star was in foul trouble, forcing the coaching staff to switch their game plan.
Now, with the 76ers, George is proving to the Clippers’ front office why they made the right decision not to extend his contract.
Paul George’s recent comments do not shock the LA Clippers' front office.
On a different team with a different coach, Paul George had high expectations following his experiences with the LA Clippers. Conversely, the 76ers have deployed him into a unique role that has not worked. In fact, Philadelphia is currently well below .500, and George’s career lows have affected the team drastically.
Furthermore, George spoke about his role with injuries to star center Joel Embiid. He stated, “To be honest, I’m bored. Playing on a five just don’t do enough for me.”
The 2019 MVP finalist has made it clear he is not used to his new role under head coach Nick Nurse, and the statistics prove it. He has recorded one of his worst seasons, and the 76ers are the 11th seed.
However, there is no justification as the 76ers’ front office granted every offseason wish for George and his party. He must adapt individually and impact the game to what he was signed for.
Nonetheless, Clipper fans have previously seen what an unhappy George looks like. These comments match the on-court issues, which explain the decisions made by executive Lawrence Frank.
