Within the next few weeks, the LA Clippers will have to make some moves to trim their roster down to the league requirement. Right now, the Clippers already have 15 guys locked in, meaning those on Exhibit 10 contracts aren't eligible to be waived and signed to a two-way contract. This includes just one player: Blake Wesley, a former first-round pick drafted by the San Antonio Spurs.
However, in the preseason opener, Wesley proved he deserves to stay with his exceptional play on both sides of the ball. So how can the Clippers’ front office sneak the 23-year-old onto the 15-man roster? By conducting a trade.
Of course, the Clippers would have to go out of their way to make this happen, but it’s worth it given how talented Wesley is.
Additionally, the Clippers have a few trade candidates who they probably wouldn’t mind moving on from.
The only way to keep Blake Wesley is for the Clippers to make a trade
In the preseason win against the Golden State Warriors, Blake Wesley logged eight points, three rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block in 18 minutes.
That’s pretty impressive if you ask me. The context of his performance, which is crucial, makes Wesley’s night look even better. He scored a clutch and-one with under a minute left to give the Clippers a lead, then secured the game-sealing stop to cap off Keaton Wagler’s heroic jumper.
The most deserving talents shine when their team needs them most, and Wesley did just that.
That said, no matter what, the Clippers need to find a way to keep Wesley around for the foreseeable future, and the only realistic way to do that is through a trade.
Right now, it would be reasonable for the Clippers to move on from one, or a combination, of Gradey Dick and Brook Lopez. They contribute in their respective ways, but at the end of the day, they are both flawed players the Clippers should be willing to move on from if it means making room for Wesley to be cemented on the regular-season roster.
In addition, Wesley’s services would be particularly helpful at the start of the year, as the Clippers will be without Brandon Ingram, Bradley Beal, Jordan Miller, Max Strus, Yanic Konan Niederhauser, and potentially Kobe Sanders.
We’ll certainly learn more throughout the rest of the preseason, but if Wesley keeps it up, the Clippers might be forced into a trade.
