John Collins gives Clippers a wrinkle LA hasn't had in years

For an extended period, likely around the time some fans developed a love for the LA Clippers, the double-big lineup has not been employed. This goes all the way back to Blake Griffin’s days in Lob City, yet after he left, the Clippers have not had this tool in their toolbox.

Conversely, LA has John Collins, who can rebound just as well at a similar height, allowing the Clippers to return to a lineup that uses a traditional power forward, rather than Kawhi Leonard or Paul George, as Tyronn Lue has done.

Additionally, Lue can quite literally toss Collins into any lineup, double-big or not, and not have to look over his shoulder to check his performance if failure transpires. This is because Collins is well-trusted and already proven, which eliminates every single void at the power forward slot.

That said, having the lineup available provides Lue with numerous potential pairings that could, over time, evolve into the best five-man lineups in the league.

John Collins’ size and skill set add a ridiculous amount of versatility

Although John Collins has some flaws in availability and on defense, his skillset adds more dynamics than anyone on the roster. This is due to his size, athleticism, and floor spacing.

The LA Clippers got extremely lucky in finding a six-foot-nine, athletic phenom who has averaged 8.1 rebounds throughout his career. Many championship teams could desperately use Collins, and some may even be jealous that LA landed him for Norman Powell and a draft pick.

The first, and likely most effective, lineup that Lue can begin with is starting Collins next to Zubac. The competition here has already been confirmed, but keeping these two on the court together throughout games will be crucial, as the front-court will basically become flawless.

However, opponents will fear Lue’s game plan just as much if he utilizes Collins with Brook Lopez. That is two elite three-point shooters, Collins at 39.9% and Lopez at 37.3% last season, dominating every aspect on both sides of the ball.

Additionally, if the Clippers really want to win with size, particularly while Kawhi Leonard rests, Lue could use Collins as the three-man, with the power forward being Lopez and the center being Zubac.

There is just so much breathing room Collins’ game adds, and these are all components that have not been present in years, as the duties he will receive have previously been distributed to superstars.
