In the upcoming NBA Draft, the LA Clippers are hoping to walk away with one prospect: Caleb Wilson. Right now, many think he’s going to go fourth to the Chicago Bulls, but because of Derrick Rose, and how his offensive mindset and superstar demeanor look similar to Darius Acuff Jr., they could roll with the number one-ranked point guard in the class, which may hand-wrap Wilson to the Clippers.
For context, Rose’s peak with the Bulls lasted only about 3.5 seasons before he suffered an ACL injury that changed the trajectory of his career; he never looked like the same player after recovery.
That said, Rose’s short-lived stardom for the Bulls could have an easy influence on taking Acuff Jr.
It might be surprising to many, but when actually thinking about the reasoning, it makes sense, and Clipper Nation is certainly not complaining.
All the Clippers want is Caleb Wilson on draft night
If fans of the LA Clippers had one wish that correlated to the draft, and there was a guarantee that it would come true, each would make one for Caleb Wilson falling to the fifth pick. He’s the dream player for LA, and there's not much explaining needed for why.
Sure, Wilson has some work to do offensively, particularly on the perimeter, as he shot a horrid 25.9% on barely over one attempt per game for the North Carolina Tar Heels. But the reason this is not of any serious concern is due to the fact that the tools to become at least a decent threat from beyond the arc are there.
The jumpshot is fluid, Wilson’s feet appear balanced, and his release is high and tight. All he needs is the right development coach at the highest level, and poof, just like that, he’ll be trouble for opponents at all three levels.
Now, with arguably the only red flag Wilson has aside, he looks like a superstar project that has an extremely high chance of paying off.
From athleticism to top-notch defense, to excellent finishing abilities, to a hunger for getting buckets in the mid-range, Wilson is practically elite on both sides of the ball.
In addition, he looks a lot like a younger Kawhi Leonard, which feeds into Clippers fans' desire to have him.
So, at the end of the day, the Chicago Bulls may end up with the power in their hands to essentially make Wilson a Clipper, and through the resemblance of Derrick Rose to Darius Acuff Jr., it could actually happen.
