After thinking Devin Carter, the 13th overall pick in 2024, didn’t belong in the NBA, the Sacramento Kings dumped him to the Atlanta Hawks, who eventually waived him. Neither team believed enough in Carter to give him a chance to fight for a roster spot after his brief stint with Sacramento. Wisely, the Boston Celtics made the low-risk move and gave him an Exhibition-10 contract. Carter took it and ran with it, as he’s been playing extremely well in the preseason.
Instead of the Celtics, it should’ve been the LA Clippers. Head coach Tyronn Lue needs a guard with Carter’s unique skill set, especially given how short-staffed the roster is, and could’ve even taken it a step further and signed him to a two-way deal. But Boston saw potential, acted faster, and understood there was ultimately nothing to lose. Now they are going to be the organization to reap the benefits.
Devin Carter would’ve been a great addition for the LA Clippers
Devin Carter just got his first chance to shine in a Boston Celtics uniform during their preseason opener, and it’s safe to say he exceeded expectations with flying colors.
During 25 minutes in a double-digit win against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Carter logged 17 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals, shooting 5-for-9 from the field.
Although Carter's numbers look good, the eye test on him is even better. He looked sharp on both ends of the floor, stayed aggressive from start to finish, and made plays for his teammates when he could.
This is the kind of response you want from a player who two different organizations just wrote off.
With everything taken into account, the LA Clippers could’ve really used Carter’s services in their rotation.
Not only is their backcourt group extremely depleted, with guys like Jordan Miller, Bradley Beal, Max Strus, and Kobe Sanders out, but his two-way skill set is also immediately playable under Tyronn Lue.
He could spark off the bench to score, chip in when the Clippers need a stop, or even be the go-to player when Darius Garland needs a breather. There is so much versatility that can be maximized with having Carter on the roster.
Unfortunately for the Clippers, the 24-year-old is with the Celtics, and he won’t be going anywhere any time soon. Props to them for making a smart move that LA certainly had the chance to make.
