At 24 years old, with experience on the highly regarded Indiana Pacers, the LA Clippers saw a pot of gold in RayJ Dennis. However, a level higher, the Clippers saw a gold mine in TyTy Washington Jr. at the G-League Showcase, and, as Shams Charania reported, an ultimatum was on the table, and Lawrence Frank waived Dennis.

The only appearance for Dennis with LA was in the recent loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. He played typical reserve minutes of just four and recorded zero points, two rebounds, zero assists, and one turnover.

Dennis is certainly talented; the Pacers would not have kept him if he were not. But, with just two years of experience, a track record of inefficiency, and a height of six-foot-one, where undersized guards nowadays typically struggle, the Clippers turned in a farewell.

RayJ Dennis was waived for the better point guard in TyTy Washington Jr.

Everything RayJ Dennis had done since being signed by the LA Clippers was for the G-League. Team scouts in San Diego witnessed his scoring prowess and likely informed Lawrence Frank to offer the two-way to TyTy Washington Jr.

Dennis was excellent, but he was not on Washington Jr.’s level. To be fair, no one was, and that is why the Clippers reacted without missing a beat and signed the talent they had on their hands.

In fact, throughout the G-League showcase, Washington Jr. averaged 34 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals. This should translate into something positive for the Clippers, if logic works the way it is supposed to, since the G League and the NBA are like two peas in a pod.

Moreover, LA will find out soon through a call-up. Tyronn Lue’s rotation is running a few men short in the backcourt, so it would be a good idea to assess his skills as the second unit point guard with Kobe Sanders as his running mate.

Additionally, Washington Jr. has been starring in San Diego, and he has experience with other superstar-oriented teams in both conferences. He may have underperformed, but at least he saw the ropes of how to succeed as a youngster.

That said, the Clippers wisely narrowed down the player in their best interest. Dennis is talented enough to stay in the loop of the NBA and G-League and could later end up back in San Diego, but, unfortunately, for now, he suffered an inequitable outcome.
