Clippers plans of trading for dream star have been tarnished with latest update

The NBA trade deadline has repeatedly served as a milestone for the LA Clippers in each regular season. The front office usually exploits their weaknesses to advance their seeding in the Western Conference. They have made significant acquisitions over the last decade and will continue with their narrow draft capital.

This season, the NBA’s most prominent star on the trade market has been Miami Heat wing Jimmy Butler. “For conduct detrimental to the team,” the Heat’s front office suspended Butler for seven games.

Moreover, this news alarmed executive Lawrence Frank, as he now had the green light to pursue the six-time all-star.

Thus far in 2024-25, Butler has recorded 17.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.7 assists. He has also shot 55.2% from the field and 37.5% from three, backing up how valuable he has been.

Butler would have been a fascinating fit next to stars James Harden and Kawhi Leonard, as he defends tirelessly and can score in any situation. This trade would have also moved the Most Improved candidate, Norman Powell, to the bench, solving another concern.

However, since being suspended, Butler and the Heat’s front office seemed far from finding a trade.T his likely implies the Heat received calls around the league, but nothing came close to their asking price of the former Eastern Conference Finals MVP.

Following the suspension, one of Butler’s teammates released an update via Instagram on Butler’s status with the Heat.

Conversely, Heat forward Kevin Love reported quicker than NBA insiders on Butler’s situation following his seven-game absence.

Although Butler will remain a Heat through February, the Clippers will be able to pull some strings in the offseason, either through free agency or a trade.

The 2020-21 steals champion has a player option going into the 2025-26 regular season. If he declines, the Clippers could sign him as an unrestricted free agent. In the event he accepts, Butler may hold out and leave time for Frank to make a trade.

Nonetheless, the Clippers’ campaign for Butler is still in force. They now have time to evaluate his stance with the Heat, which could serve as a win for Frank.
