Bradley Beal is known for his offensive prowess. When he is healthy, the former Phoenix Suns guard is one of the better scorers in the NBA. However, he has endured struggles on the defensive end of the floor. Perhaps Beal can take a step forward on defense with the Clippers during the 2025-26 NBA season, however.
The Clippers are looking for Beal to make a big impact. He is obviously going to contribute at a more consistent level from an offensive standpoint. After spending the first portion of his career in Washington with the Wizards, Beal joined the Suns for the 2023-24 campaign. He endured ups and downs in Phoenix, though, appearing in exactly 53 games in each of his years with the team.
At the very least, the Clippers are hoping to have Beal available for the postseason. If he can play in 60 or more contests, however, that would prove to be especially impactful for LA. So, why could the Clippers help Beal take a step forward on defense?
Playing for the Clippers represents a fresh start for the veteran. As a result, there may be extra motivation for Beal with his new team. He has played hard in the past despite the circumstances, but extra motivation certainly will not hurt matters.
Additionally, the Suns built their roster around offense in recent years. Kevin Durant and Devin Booker are both known for their offensive games. Phoenix's defense was inconsistent. The Clippers, meanwhile, developed their identity around defense a season ago. Although they have shifted toward offense this offseason, there are still plenty of strong defenders on the roster.
With a potentially added focus on defense, Beal may emerge as a more reliable defensive presence. No, he likely will not be making any All-Defensive teams anytime soon, but he could take a step forward.
Clippers should not forget about their defensive identity
The Clippers should continue to focus on their defensive identity. It helped them throughout the regular season last year. Things did not go according to plan in the postseason, but defense still played an impactful role for the team.
Adding a player such as Bradley Beal will help the offense more than the defense. The move could lead to a more balanced overall approach, though, since Kawhi Leonard will lead the way on defense.
Beal's defense will be something to monitor in 2025-26.
