The moment fans heard the LA Clippers were involved in rumors about Jaylen Brown with the fifth overall pick, everyone’s heart dropped. Clipper Nation is well aware of Brown’s talent, as he scored 50 points on LA this past season, but they don’t want to see him acquired at the expense of trading one of the top spots in the upcoming draft.

The good news, though, is that Marc J. Spears, one of the most credible names in the business, followed through with an update on the Brown rumors and reported that the Clippers are not interested. Rather, Spears added that the Clippers like their current youth movement.

That’s a sigh of relief, to say the least, and it goes to show the Clippers have their heads screwed on straight, particularly with how valuable the pick they have is.

Clippers Fans didn’t want to see the fifth pick traded for Jaylen Brown

In every way, shape, or form, Jaylen Brown is a superstar in the NBA. In fact, he’s been one for years now, and to back it up, there are five All-Star selections, two All-NBA cuts, a ring, and a highly regarded Finals MVP on his resume.

Additionally, Brown is coming off his best season as a veteran, averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists, shooting 47.7% from the floor and 34.7% from beyond the arc.

As a result, the LA Clippers would not be mistaken if they believed a player like him, next to Kawhi Leonard, had a legitimate chance of winning it all.

However, to obtain Brown, the fifth pick would have to be taken away from LA’s playing field, and that’s a deal-breaker for Clipper Nation.

Brown is going to turn 30 in October. A player like that is way out of the timeline the Clippers are focused on building around, and additionally, he’s on one of the most lucrative contracts in the league.

For context, Brown has a fully guaranteed $183+ million due through 2028-29. This is a ridiculous amount of money and will have a tremendous impact on the Clippers’ highly anticipated free agency plans in the coming years.

That said, are a few more elite years out of Brown really worth it, when the front office could use their current spot in the lottery and select a face of the franchise for the foreseeable future? Probably not.

For the fans, it’s certainly nice to know the organization is in agreement.
