Training camp for teams all over the association is creeping up around the corner, and Jalen Duren’s status with the Detroit Pistons has remained the same since they were bounced in the second round by the Cleveland Cavaliers: a restricted free agent. Duren and his camp appear to want more money than Detroit is offering. Regarding the LA Clippers, they should hope an agreement isn't met before the season begins and that the young center settles for his qualifying offer of $9.6 million.
Why is that, one might ask? Well, this creates the pathway for Duren to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, when the Clippers, whose future just took a significant turn in the wrong direction through the cap circumvention punishment involving Kawhi Leonard, can pay him the money he desires on a long-term contract.
The Clippers need a player like Jalen Duren in their future
At the moment, we don’t need to dig too deep into the LA Clippers’ draft capital for the next seven years. It’s looking pretty bleak, with just four first-round picks once the trade of Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors is finalized.
On the other hand, the Clippers aren’t looking too hot in the department of young talent either. The only serious pieces they have that are considered stars or soon-to-be stars are Darius Garland and Keaton Wagler. It’s literally just those two, and a handful of guys that are unproven.
That said, one can only imagine how much Jalen Duren would transcend the team’s outlook for the foreseeable future.
Duren is currently 22 years old and already has an All-Star appearance and All-NBA honor on his resume. That speaks volumes about his potential, work ethic, and overall commitment to the game.
Last season, for the Detroit Pistons, Duren started for 70 games and averaged an impressive 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists, shooting 65.0% from the floor. And what’s also worth noting is how the former lottery pick has been relatively healthy since entering the league in 2022, as he’s suited up in 276 out of his 328 contests.
Now, if you throw Duren into the core of Garland and Wagler, the Clippers’ future looks phenomenal. If guys like Kobe Sanders, Jordan Miller, Baba Miller, and Yanic Konan Niederhauser grow and live up to the hype, LA will be set.
However, this is only possible if Duren and the Pistons can’t agree on a number and he ends up settling for the qualifying offer instead.
