Of the many talents still unsigned, the top one remaining is the one-time All-Star, Jalen Duren. He seems to be on a different page numbers-wise than the Detroit Pistons’ front office, and that’s where the holdup is, despite coming fresh off the best season of his young career. As a result, Bleacher Report proposed an idea that would send Duren to the LA Clippers for Darius Garland in a sign-and-trade.
Right off the bat, most would be opposed to it. Garland just arrived in LA last season and showed so much promise in such a short period of time. But, on second thought, the duo of Keaton Wagler and Duren sounds too good to pass up.
The Clippers would have their two faces of the franchise secured for the foreseeable future and can build around them to compete for a ring.
Darius Garland for Jalen Duren is by no means a bad idea
Although there are questions about Jalen Duren and his ability to rise to the occasion as a second option, he broke out last season for the Detroit Pistons and showed how good he can be.
In 70 games, Duren posted 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists, shooting 65.0% from the field.
Those numbers are insanely good, and because they contributed to a 60-win Pistons squad, Duren got the All-Star nod and made the All-NBA third team as well.
Above the production Duren presented is the fact that he’s not even 23 years old. Yes, you read that right. The 2022 13th overall pick is still 22 and is heavily regarded as one of the best centers in the league.
In the grand scheme of things, Duren’s future is extremely bright. He’s only going to get better on both sides of the ball from here on out, which could benefit a team like the LA Clippers tremendously.
Of course, it wouldn’t be easy parting ways with Darius Garland. He quickly became a guard the fans love, with his flashy handle, elite passing, and ability to make contested shots, no matter how many hands were in his face.
Conversely, Garland does have a bit of injury concern that could linger, as it did during his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
So, if the Clippers have a chance to land their second-option of the future for Garland, who is four years older, they should, even though it won’t be easy saying goodbye.
