For good reason, given his age and glaring flaws, many were shocked that the LA Clippers exercised Brook Lopez's team option this summer. Last season, he repeatedly proved he didn’t deserve another chance, yet LA gave it to him anyway because they saw hope in his game. Little did everyone criticizing the Clippers know the front office was on to something, as the big man has done nothing but vindicate their decision to keep him thus far.

In the second game of the season in Los Angeles, a 38-year-old Lopez posted 22 points (second on the team), 4 rebounds, and 3 blocks in just 20 minutes, shooting 8-for-9 from the field. This came just after opening night, where he racked up 17 points and 11 rebounds in the win against the Sacramento Kings.

Believe it or not, Lopez hasn't just been good; he’s been flawless. This was totally unexpected, to say the least.

One of the Clippers’ best decisions over the summer appears to be retaining Brook Lopez

After too many disappointing performances, with averages of 8.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 42.8% from the field, the LA Clippers could’ve easily let Brook Lopez walk for nothing last season, and nobody would have said a word.

Somehow, someway, though, despite his worst year yet, the Clippers believed in Lopez, and it’s paying off, cementing his return as one of the Clippers’ best decisions of the summer.

Against the Sacramento Kings, Lopez helped the Clippers pull away by 25 points. He was active in the paint, spaced the floor, made the right reads in the high post, and, as always, protected the rim at a relatively high level.

The Clippers couldn't ask for more from a veteran nearing Father Time. Still, he gave it anyway. In the Battle of L.A., Lopez suddenly became the offense's focal point in almost every minute he played.

With the ball in his hands in the half-court, he opened the door for the offense, making it easy for him to get going, and for others as well, like Derrick Jones Jr. and Kris Dunn. How else do you think LA kept it close against the Lakers, with Darius Garland turning the ball over nine times and Rui Hachimura missing nine of his 14 attempts from the field?

Overall, Lopez has been exceptional. He’s playing well on both ends, putting the Clippers in a position to at least challenge talented, well-rounded opponents.
