After the 2026 NBA Draft, it was no secret that the LA Clippers selected Keaton Wagler to shoot the lights out of the arena, make plays for his teammates, and play high-level defense. This skill set, which many fellow rookie guards couldn't offer, alongside Darius Garland and Co., would make winning basketball games significantly easier for Tyronn Lue and the Clippers.

What do you know? In his debut, Wagler backed up why the Clippers picked him to a T, and they ended up destroying the Sacramento Kings by 25. The 19-year-old put up 15 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and just 1 turnover, shooting 4-for-8 from the field and 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.

From start to finish, Wagler did nearly everything right. This has to have the Clippers’ front office smiling from ear to ear, as they evaluated him perfectly throughout the complicated pre-draft process.

Keaton Wagler played exactly how the LA Clippers needed him to in his debut

The box score does a great job of telling the story of Keaton Wagler’s first-ever game in the NBA. He contributed in nearly every area on both ends of the floor and embraced the role of spark off the LA Clippers’ bench. This is really good stuff for a point guard who is extremely young and inexperienced.

However, context is missing: the stats the fifth overall pick recorded don't mention how well he pushed the pace, handled the ball under pressure, kept finding ways to be aggressive, or overcame the physicality of the defense (an issue that became apparent early in the summer league).

Quite literally, the Sacramento Kings tried throwing whatever they could at Wagler. To their surprise, none of it worked. He seemed unfazed and calm through it all, which really stood out.

This is the kind of performance the Clippers needed from Wagler. With no true second scoring option and no veteran playmaker outside of Darius Garland, because of the partially torn Achilles Brandon Ingram is recovering from, Wagler stepped up, finishing third on the team in points and tied for second in assists.

Moving forward, he should focus on leaving the same type of impact. This doesn’t mean racking up a bunch of points and assists, but just being a positive factor on the court. Doing so will ultimately put the Lue and the Clippers in position to win on a regular basis.
