3 realistic moves the LA Clippers could make at the trade deadline

Given the LA Clippers’ winning record, the front office is under the impression of minimal change at the deadline. This could be a smart decision, despite common belief, as head coach Tyronn Lue has a strong rhythm flowing with franchise superstar Kawhi Leonard in the rotation.

Although several trades at the deadline may be what fans are looking for, the top priority for executive Lawrence Frank could be to clean up the roster and manage the team’s cap room.

Conversely, this approach implies how reliant the Clippers are on Leonard’s health. They have seen what the rotation can do with the two-time champion, and Frank holds high optimism that he can take on the pressure of a deep playoff run.

That said, below are three realistic decisions the Clippers could make through February 6th.

3. Package P.J. Tucker with a second-round pick

With an expensive salary at nearly 40 years-of-age, the LA Clippers have received minimum interest for their veteran forward, P.J. Tucker. This explains why the front office has taken ample time to move his contract.

Furthermore, the best way to draw teams into trading for Tucker is by adding a second-round pick. Consequently, the Clippers will create cap space while being relieved from Tucker, who will become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

There is also a possibility the Clippers receive a contributor in return.

2. Buying out D’Angelo Russell from the Brooklyn Nets

As a ten-year veteran, D’Angelo Russell can help the LA Clippers on a feasible contract. Though he is not an all-star, Russell can still rack up points and assists off Tyronn Lue's bench.

In 39 games, Russell has averaged 13.0 points and 5.4 assists in 25.9 minutes per contest. Sure, the efficiencies and defensive abilities may be sub-par, but the one-time all-star can still impact the offense positively.

A buy-out for Russell would be a realistic move, as he would likely sign for a cheaper contract if the Clippers show serious interest.

1. Trading with Washington for Jonas Valančiūnas

As the Wizards have only won six games, the LA Clippers should contact their front office for Jonas Valančiūnas. Though he signed a three-year deal in the offseason, the Wizards may use his team-friendly contract to add younger pieces.

Valančiūnas, at 32-years-old, is averaging 11.4 points and 8.0 rebounds in 19.7 minutes for Washington. The Clippers could use his size and offensive production beyond starting big man Ivica Zubac.

In return, the Clippers may hand over the score-first guard, Bones Hyland, and backup center, Mo Bamba, to aid Washington with more youth.
