Is Marcus Morris ‘Mr. Consistent’ for the LA Clippers?
By Matthew Morrisey
Prior to the start of the season, head coach Tyronn Lue named Marcus Morris Sr. the LA Clippers’ starting power forward. This move has been nothing short of successful as Morris has been one of the team’s most consistent players. Heading into this weekend’s match-up versus the Utah Jazz, Morris is averaging 14.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists while showing a strong motor on the defensive end.
Moreover, the absence of the two-way superstar Kawhi Leonard have loomed large over this Clippers team as have Paul George’s early season struggles. This has allowed Morris to attempt more shots and score the ball at an efficient rate. Besides Friday night’s poor shooting performance, Morris has been the LA Clippers’ most consistent player through the team’s first nine games.
Morris’ early season play for the LA Clippers backs up why Lue selected him as the starting forward.
Since opening night, Morris is second on the LA Clippers in points, second in minutes, and one of the team’s most efficient shot creators. His double-double against the Houston Rockets was a perfect example of how valuable he is to the team despite what his role may be.
Furthermore, Morris scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against the Rockets, resulting in a much-needed win. Houston’s game-plan could not contain the three-point line as he shot 4/8 from distance. While Morris may be 33 years old, LA Clipper fans should expect more of these performances if his health prevails.
With Leonard out due to knee stiffness, Lue will need Morris to continue to dominate in all aspects of the game. Regardless of how many points he scores, his impact on the glass and in the paint will hold the Clippers in playoff contention until the roster can return to full health.
In addition, Morris provides space for players like Leonard and George to go to work. Although his name may be involved in trade rumors, Morris’ leadership and scoring punch is fundamental to the Clippers’ success as they look to take a jump in the Western Conference standings.
