Trading with the Spurs for Poeltl would elevate the Clippers’ title hopes
As of right now, the LA Clippers’ imperfections primarily correlate to the center position. On several occasions, shots aren’t falling, and on others, there is a lack of effort on both ends of the floor. Thus the careless mistakes through lineups who are missing a presence on the glass.
Furthermore, the two-way big man, Ivica Zubac, is doing all he can to leave his impact on the floor. Coming into the season, Zubac was expected to be playing north of 30 minutes per game or even higher. He took this opportunity and has yet to disappoint. However, when the seven-footer is off the floor, the LA Clippers lose a player who can consistently grab rebounds and protect the rim.
It has been recently reported that the San Antonio Spurs’ glass-cleaning center, Jakob Poeltl, has emerged as a trade candidate. The LA Clippers’ front office should do all they can to acquire Poeltl while maintaining their rotational pieces. A move like this would solve the miscues and boost the game plan of head coach Tyronn Lue.
Regarding his fit, Poeltl would face no troubles in starring in his role for the LA Clippers. Whether or not he is deemed a starter, Poeltl would provide Lue with elite rim protection and some of the league’s best rebounding abilities. This is similar to how Zubac dominates in the minutes he is on the floor.
Trading with the Spurs for Jakob Poeltl should be a priority for the LA Clippers seven games into the season.
Adding a talent like Jakob Poeltl to the current rotation would give the LA Clippers another center who can excel at a high level. Not to mention, franchise superstars Kawhi Leonard and Paul George would receive less pressure from opponents, especially in the paint.
Last year (2021-22), Poeltl broke out, leading the Spurs in numerous categories. He finished the season averaging 13.5 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks, shooting 61.8% from the field on nearly ten attempts. This is exactly what the Clippers are missing, as they are one of the worst offensive-rebounding teams in the NBA.
Moreover, the Spurs may only ask for a small amount in return as they are in the midst of their rebuild. This gives the front office a bit of leverage in what they could offer in exchange for Poeltl. The trade package for the LA Clippers would likely consist of draft picks and possibly a young talent to help the Spurs for the years ahead.
In addition, Poeltl would see the best opportunity of his professional career playing under Lue and the LA Clippers. He would also be in the most promising position to win a championship, something he has yet to experience since entering the league. That said, the Clippers should show the utmost interest in Poeltl as he would solve what the franchise is looking for.
