Paul George MVP odds delivering mixed results in best year with Clippers
By Evan Desai
Paul George hasn’t been as amazing as he’s been this season since before he was in an LA Clippers uniform.
The last season he had that could compare with this one was the 2018-2019 season. This year is his first time averaging 25+ points per game since then, his first time averaging over seven rebounds per game since then, the first time he’s ever averaged over 5.2 assists per game, and the first time he’s stolen approximately two steals per game (1.9) since that 2018-2019 year (2.2).
His numbers aren’t quite as good as they were that year, but this year means even more due to the circumstances. That year, there was another star on the team with him in Russell Westbrook. This year, his superstar teammate in Kawhi Leonard has been hurt all year.
In the 2018-2019 season, PG13 finished third in the MVP race. It’s why it’s surprising that this year, he’s listed as having the seventh-best NBA MVP odds at +4000 (WynnBET).
Paul George’s NBA MVP odds aren’t living up to the type of season he’s having for the LA Clippers.
Ten games ago, when the Clippers were 10-7, Paul George’s MVP odds were at +3000 (eighth-best in NBA). Now they’re as previously mentioned, sitting at +4000.
Now, PG’s odds are seventh in the league while they were eighth then. It goes to show that PG13’s odds aren’t plummeting compared to the players around him, but the overall odds for him still aren’t improving, which is what matters.
While there’s a lot of competition out there, PG needs to be respected for getting his team to a top five seed in the West at 15-12. Luka Doncic, for instance, is sitting at eighth in the West at 12-13 but is still multiple spots ahead of PG at the fifth-best odds. He has +2500 odds to win the prestigious award.
Fans and media around the league don’t seem to understand just how difficult what PG is doing is, as he has to take on the role of Leonard with Kawhi being out all year. Teams are throwing everything, and even the kitchen sink at George to try to stop the lone star on this team.
He has been much more than the eighth-most valuable player in the NBA this season. It’s time to start giving the star wing his respect.
