No. 3 reason LA Clippers fans shouldn’t panic about Kawhi Leonard free agency: Money can’t always buy trophies

There are a couple suitors for Kawhi Leonard that will have a ridiculous amount of money to spend, and more than the LA Clippers.

The New York Knicks, for instance, will have $72.8 million to spend this offseason.

They can offer a lot, and it doesn’t get better than being able to play in Madison Square Garden. The Knicks are a pretty solid team nowadays too.

But, if they buy Kawhi Leonard, I don’t know if they’ll get a trophy in return. This is because; what else are they going to be able to spend money on after that?

Let’s say Kawhi signs with them for $40 million per year (which very well might be too low). They’ll pick up Julius Randle’s $20 million option, and now they only have $12.8 million left to spend.

What are they going to be able to buy with $12.8 million more if they also then re-sign Derrick Rose, which both parties seem to want to do? Not much, and their roster may not be a championship roster.

If Kawhi stays with the Clippers, however, the Clippers will immediately be the likely Western Conference favorites at the least.

It just wouldn’t be worth it for Leonard to leave the Clippers. It’s simple: The best situation for him is for him to stay.
