The Trades That Got Us Here

Shai!

The first and easiest trade to evaluate happened on draft night. The LA Clippers sent the 12th overall pick in the NBA draft (via Detroit) along with a second rounder (via Detroit) to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for the draft rights to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Shai was the team’s focus in the draft and has already shown a lot of potential for the team in his rookie year. Unless he’s part of a blockbuster trade for a star, SGA looks to be the starting point guard for the Clips for a long time to come.

The Philly Deal

Just a few days ago, LA once again shocked the league by trading away arguably the best player on their team. Tobias Harris, along with Boban Marjanovic and Mike Scott were shipped to Philadelphia for a number of players and picks. The pieces received were:

  • Landry Shamet
  • Mike Muscala
  • Wilson Chandler
  • 2020 1st Round Pick via Philadelphia (Lottery Protected)
  • 2021 1st Round Pick via Miami
  • 2021 2nd Round Pick via Philadelphia
  • 2023 2nd Round Pick via Philadelphia

Not too shabby for a player who very well may have left in free agency and two role players, right? But, like the Griffin trade, this move wasn’t done in a vacuum.

Dealing with the Lakers

Mike Muscala was flipped to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Ivica Zubac and Michael Beasley. The team is likely to waive Beasley, but Zubac is a young center with potential who will be a restricted free agent this summer. As long as he doesn’t receive a big offer that LA can’t match, he should be part of the future plans as well.

Avery in Memphis

Avery Bradley was sent to the Memphis Grizzlies at the trade deadline. The Clippers received back two expiring contracts in JaMychal Green and Garrett Temple. Neither are a guarantee to be part of the team’s future, but can contribute now and might be brought back next year on low contracts.

The big deal here was moving Bradley’s money. Even if the team waived him, he would still be guaranteed $2 million. Having this money off the books helps the team in their pursuit of free agents.

That’s it. Every single thing received from the Detroit Pistons for Blake Griffin has been traded. So what all did the Clippers ultimately receive?
