In a recent interview with CBS, Tobias Harris reiterated his desire to stay in LA. The Los Angeles Clippers should return the favor and extend him now.

During his extensive interview with CBS, which you can find here, the Los Angeles Clippers’ Tobias Harris reiterated that he wants to remain in LA with the team.

The response popped up when he was asked about both his and Boban Marjanovic‘s impending free agency next summer and if they would look to stay together.

"CBS: You and Boban are going to be free agents together at the end of the season. Are you guys a package deal?TH: Man, I mean, we would love to be a package deal here in L.A., staying in L.A. You never know what can happen, but, just us being friends, we wish the best for each other. So if the right opportunity comes for him and it’s elsewhere without me, you know, I’m not going to hold his hand. But, I mean he’s a great teammate, great player. I would love to continue playing with him, and hopefully it’s here in L.A."

Harris was already offered an extension by the Clippers, estimated around $80 million, but turned it down. The $80 million was the maximum amount the team could offer as extension, but Harris is likely hoping that he can earn more on a new contract.

Clips Cap Space

The Clippers do potentially have the cap space for two max contracts next summer. Provided they sign a superstar like Kawhi Leonard or Jimmy Butler, the team could theoretically re-sign Harris above the cap. However, this could severely limit their ability to fill out their bench, which would be depleted in order to make space for star players.

As of now, the only players currently signed for the 2019-20 season are Avery Bradley, Danilo Gallinari, Jerome Robinson, Lou Williams, Jawun Evans and Sindarius Thornwell. While there are some solid pieces among this group, being able to add other pieces alongside a star would be necessary.

Bringing Back Tobias

Getting Tobias back would be huge, as he could slot as either the 3 or the 4 and would be a familiar face for the franchise. His shooting has improved almost every season, with his best season from the three-point line coming last year at 41.4%.

The Clippers seem adamant in keeping Harris, having already told the Timberwolves that they would not be willing to move him in any deal for Jimmy Butler. This, coupled with the extension offered show the team is committed to keeping him, but how committed are they?

Harris has the potential to be an All-Star caliber player. Should he prove that even further this season, the team has to make sure he stays in LA. Harris is a part of the new culture the team is working to build and if they want to maintain that identity, re-signing him is the first step.

Even if there is some cap management that has to take place, the Clippers should look to give Harris what he wants.
