With the 2018 NBA Draft lottery less than two weeks away, we look at why the Los Angeles Clippers drafting Collin Sexton and Robert Williams is smart.

It’s almost here! The 2018 NBA Draft lottery happens in just 12 days. On May 15th, we will finally know what spots the Los Angeles Clippers will select at. All signs point to the team having both the 12th and the 13th pick in the draft, so we’ll have to assume that for now. With these two picks, it would be smart for the team to take both Collin Sexton and Robert Williams.

Robert Williams

Now, this isn’t the first time we’ve delved into the selection of Robert Williams. The Texas A&M center shows a lot of potential and appropriately is compared to none other than DeAndre Jordan. With Jordan possibly hitting the free agency market, now is the time to look at his replacement. Doc has proven with DJ that he can get more out of his big men, so having Williams in the system could be huge.

More from Clipperholics

Williams has great length (7’5.5″ wingspan) and rebounding prowess, as well as shot blocking capabilities. He was inconsistent in school, but perhaps being in the right system could get him motivated every night.

Collin Sexton

While Williams’ benefit comes from the defensive end, Collin Sexton looks like he could be an offensive juggernaut. The kid can flat out score. By starting his career in the NBA coming off the bench, he could get shoehorned into a 6th man role, especially if he doesn’t get better at the deep ball or passing. But hey, Lou Williams has made one heck of a career coming off the bench, right?

Sexton could learn a lot from Lou Will and if he does work to correct the deficiencies in his game, he could easily evolve into a starting guard. Sexton is only 19 years old, so he definitely has time to work on his game.

The duo

This duo, while raw now, look like they could be key cogs in future teams. Scoring guards are becoming more common and athletic bigs who can run and protect the rim are becoming a commodity. Neither player looks to help immediately, but with the front office looking to the future, both players make sense.
