Despite several meetings between he and Owner Steve Ballmer, DeAndre Jordan and the Los Angeles Clippers are reportedly not close on a contract extension.

DeAndre Jordan, the Los Angeles Clippers’ all-leader in games played, may not be a Clipper much longer.

According to Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times, Jordan and Steve Ballmer have had dinner “a couple of times” to talk about the big man’s future with the team. The talks reportedly progressed into discussion of a contract extension, but there is yet to be an agreement.

Jordan’s contract will expire at the end of the season, assuming he decides against opting into his player option. If he opts in, he’ll be due about $24 million, and he’s bound for free agency if he opts out.

DJ has long been the anchor of the Clipper defense. A two-time All-Defensive selection, Jordan is averaging 14.8 rebounds and 1.0 block per game this season. His blocking numbers have significantly declined since the 2013-2014 season, in which he recorded a career-high 2.5 per contest. This year’s mark is his lowest since his sophomore season in which he managed 0.9 per game.

Jordan will be a highly-coveted free agent target if the two sides fail to reach an agreement on an extension. That is, if he isn’t traded prior to the impending deadline on February 8. His name has appeared in plenty of headlines and rumors, most recently in regards to a Hassan Whiteside – Jordan swap. There isn’t much backing to the rumor, but hey, it’s out there.

The Clippers could go a number of ways with Jordan before the season ends. Interest on the trade market is certainly there, but it appears the organization is keen on keeping him long-term. It’s only a matter of time, now.
