To start off the 2017 offseason, the LA Clippers announced the hiring of Jerry West as a consultant for the team.
It’s finally official. During a press conference on Monday, the LA Clippers announced that Jerry West would be joining the team in a consulting position. West was joined on stage by Lawrence Frank and Doc Rivers. West has been in a similar position for the Golden State Warriors and was looking for a new challenge. Doc apparently lured him away.
"“If you want to win, you got to hire good people. Since I’ve taken the job, I’ve been on him about this. C’mon, c’mon. And he finally broke loose.”"
West said that this would be the last adventure of his life and gave a rough timeline of two years. With Blake Griffin, Chris Paul and J.J. Redick set to all be free agents, it does not sound like Jerry West will be wanting to do a rebuild. Perhaps he will be the one to make a blockbuster trade for Paul George? Or maybe, he can convince LeBron James to join the team next summer, especially with all the uncertainty in Cleveland.
“The Logo” originally wanted to work with the Lakers, but they apparently did not give him any thought and instead went straight to Magic Johnson to run the team. West’s son, Ryan West, is still with the Lakers, but there have been murmurs that he’ll switch locker rooms.
With this hiring and the announcement of a new stadium in Inglewood, it’s an exciting time for the LA Clippers. Now, they have to turn their gaze onto free agency. Hopefully Jerry West will be enough to help this team retool and make a run at a championship.
