In an announcement made earlier today, TheBig3 league stated that Corey Maggette and Cuttino “Cat” Mobley would once again join forces on the basketball court.
Before Lob City was born, it was widely believed that the mid-to-late 2000’s was the best era of Clipper basketball to date. In 2006, they won their first playoff series since the move from Buffalo. LA defeated the Denver Nuggets in 5 games in the first round, and lost a closely-contested series in Game 7 to the Phoenix Suns. Still, history was made. It was their first playoff appearance in 13 years.
That historic Clippers squad was led by none other than Maggette and Mobley, who both departed LA in 2008. Now here we are in 2017, a few months away from seeing the duo step foot on the court together again.
Maggette and Mobley will be captain and co-captain of the team “Power” in the new 3-on-3 league that is made up entirely of former NBA players. With the inaugural game falling on June 26th of this year, it gives NBA fans something to watch during the summer. While the only named venue thus far is Barclays Center, it’s safe to assume that the teams will travel. Fox Sports will televise every game.
Other notable players in the league include Allen Iverson, Chauncey Billups, Steve Francis, Jermaine O’Neal, Jason Williams, Mike Bibby, Latrell Sprewell, and of course Brian Scalabrine.
Each team seems to have a former HOFer as a coach as well. Already named are George Gervin, Julius Erving, Clyde Drexler, Gary Payton, and Charles Oakley.
The league will give basketball fans, old and new, a chance to see NBA greats playing once again. For Clippers fans, we are given the chance to see some of our most beloved players of all time. What’s not to love?
