Are the Clippers going to look at signing Matt Barnes?
The Sacramento Kings are waiving forward Matt Barnes today after trading DeMarcus Cousins. Could he end up back with the Clippers?
Per reports, the Kings are waiving Matt Barnes today in order to complete the blockbuster DeMarcus Cousins trade.
Barnes, a former Clippers player, almost signed with the team during the summer, but after Doc Rivers made other moves, there was no room to bring Barnes in.
“I thought it was a done deal, I was going to the Clippers,” Barnes said. “The day before I was supposed to meet with Doc Rivers, they decided to go in another direction with Wesley Johnson. That was obviously my first choice at the time, to be close to my kids. Golden State was always a choice; they just didn’t have very much money. I’ve always been the guy to take less money to play on a better team, but the price gap was too far on this one.”
Barnes also mentioned his want to play for the Clippers when on J.J. Redick’s podcast in the fall. Matt Barnes signed a 2 year, $12.5 million deal with the Kings, who now can stretch out his contract after reportedly only wanting to take in younger players moving forward. Barnes had been a solid part of the Kings rotation.

Barnes most recently was a member of the Clippers 2 seasons ago, after re-joining the team in 2012. He was traded as part of a deal for Lance Stephenson.
He was a Clippers’ fan favorite and would be a much needed fit off the bench, after more inconsistent small-forward play. Barnes also can play some small-ball four and gives the Clippers more versatility. Currently, Doc has relied on a stable of small forwards including, Luc Mbah a Moute, Wesley Johnson and Alan Anderson. There have also been stints that Austin Rivers has played the 3 spot.
