Check out the footage of Kevin Garnett’s time at the LA Clippers’ training camp and his work with Blake Griffin.
Kevin Garnett‘s focus as he joined the LA Clippers’ training camp last Thursday and Friday was to work with Blake Griffin, to share some of his knowledge after putting together a Hall of Fame career. It was exciting for fans to hear that KG, so soon after retiring, had showed up.
Garnett, one of the top power forwards and arguably the best ever (to some), altered the position with his combination of quickness, agility, strength, and skill. He could defend in ways that few big men have and he shot from 20 feet like few could during his time.
Garnett was a force at both ends of the floor, so Griffin must have been thrilled at the opportunity to work with him.
A lot of their one-on-one training consisted of Garnett showing Griffin some moves in the post. Teaching him ways to fight for position and react to his defender, either faking the shot to get past inside or turning back for a jumper.
Here’s some more footage showing their work together in the post.
Garnett also joined LA Clippers assistant coach Sam Cassell to help him practice with Griffin.

One part of their practice included Griffin creating space inside by bodying up behind and alongside Garnett, forcing him further up the lane, then darting down towards the extra space below the basket to create an easy pass for Cassell (or whoever delivers such a pass to him next season).
It’s a simple method of creating space, and for a player with the kind of strength that Griffin has, it’s especially effective.

Griffin proceeded to work on his mid-range game and free throws, continuing the work that he’s been putting in all summer on his shooting. He’s taken more threes than ever over the last few months, and while he’s said he won’t overuse the three, he wants to be confident from that range and add the threat of it to his game.
The work is already paying off, too, as he comfortably made a couple of threes in the Clippers’ open scrimmage on Saturday.
We don’t know yet if Garnett is going to join the LA Clippers on an official basis. Doc wants to bring him onboard for the off-court benefits of him as a teacher, working with guys like Griffin in the post and helping the mindset and defensive approach of the team.

Nothing is certain at this stage, but Doc has said he’s confident Garnett will be around a lot over the next season, even if nothing is official. That’s nothing but good news for the Clippers.
