So far, the LA Clippers have made a variety of free agency moves toward getting this team back to the level of a top-tier Western Conference contender. With Paul George now officially out of the picture, there is much work to be done in recouping talent and building out the roster in his absence.
Of course, one of the biggest holes was at wing just a few short hours ago. The Clippers were already notably short on wing depth, and George's departure only worsened those issues. But since then, the front office has done an excellent job of shopping around and bringing in more than serviceable replacements.
Getting Derrick Jones Jr. is a massive win for management, and will help to lessen the impact of losing PG for nothing. Fans will be thrilled to see Nic Batum back, and Kris Dunn should provide a big lift in the backcourt as well. As the Clippers finish up filling out the roster, there is one big priority they should have near the top of their list: extending Ivica Zubac.
The Clippers must find an extension for Ivica Zubac
As of right now, Zubac is headed into the final year of his three-year, $32.8 million deal in Los Angeles. The big man has proven time and again that he is one of the best, most reliable starting centers in the association, and the Clippers should already be thinking ahead about re-signing him sooner rather than later.
This past season, Zubac had arguably the best season of his career. He put up a career-best 11.7 points and 9.2 rebounds on a very efficient 64.9% shooting from the floor. His ability to dominate his competition in the paint and on the boards was a big advantage-creator for the Clippers.
While LA is still committed to contending, and they should be as long as Kawhi Leonard remains in town, they should seek to prioritize Zubac nearly as much as they do Leonard and James Harden. Once the craziness of free agency dies down in a few weeks, getting Zubac re-upped should be the Clippers' top priority.
