Plenty of LA Clippers fans were excited to watch their team's star compete on the highest stage of international basketball this summer. Kawhi Leonard was set to be part of the United States' Olympic team, and help bring the US their fifth straight Olympic gold medal.
But all that changed when it was announced that Kawhi would be stepping away from Team USA due to continued troubles with his knee. The same injury that kept him out of four of the Clippers' six first-round playoff games against the Mavericks had reportedly flared back up, and he was supposedly unable to participate in the kind of fast-paced action that would take place at the Olympics.
Recently, new details to this situation were revealed that will no doubt be troublesome to Clipper nation. According to Clippers President Lawrence Frank, the organization disagreed with Team USA's decision to pivot away from Leonard, and they were disappointed with the decision.
The Clippers were 'disappointed' in USA Basketball's decision
This runs in stark contrast to the original story we were given on this matter. Initially, the official reason for Kawhi stepping away from the Olympic team was described as a mutual decision that both parties agreed was the best move to make given the circumstances.
Now, it is clear that the Clippers had an issue with how things transpired. In a recent press conference, Lawrence Frank said that Leonard "looked good" in the first few USA practices and that there were no setbacks. Frank was understanding of the decision, but still felt Kawhi could participate.
Obviously, this situation is confusing and the details behind the decision are still coming out. But as of right now, it seems that the Olympic training staff had a difference of opinion with Kawhi and with the Clippers' medical staff. What this means for Leonard's health going forward is unknown, but Frank's belief in his capability is certainly reassuring.
