At the current moment, the projected starter for the LA Clippers’ backcourt, alongside Darius Garland, seems to be Kris Dunn. In all honesty, Dunn is by no means a bad choice. He brings defensive tenacity, which the Clippers desperately need considering Garland’s shortcomings on that side of the ball, and a respectable level of floor spacing opponents know not to leave open. The veteran guard is also skilled in crashing the glass on both ends and making plays when needed.
But I’m here to tell you there’s a better pick to start, and he’s standing right in front of the Clippers. His name is Max Strus. While he cannot provide the intensity Dunn brings, the former undrafted free agent can hold his ground on defense and is a far better offensive option. If that weren’t enough, Garland would probably prefer Strus, as they go way back to when they were teammates on the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Max Strus is a better pick to start for the Clippers over Kris Dunn
Statistically speaking, there isn’t even a debate. Max Strus is the guy head coach Tyronn Lue should go with in the starting lineup over Kris Dunn.
Last season, despite only playing 12 games, Strus became a real factor for the Cleveland Cavaliers, which they needed. He averaged 11.2 points, shot 40.2% from beyond the arc on 6.8 attempts, and helped the Cavaliers navigate their way to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since LeBron James’ days in 2018.
Kris Dunn, on the other hand, did a little bit of everything by posting 7.3 points, 3.6 assists, and 3.3 rebounds, shooting 47.6% from the field and 37.4% from beyond the arc.
At first glance, Strus wins the numbers battle with ease. But if we take a look at Dunn’s track record, it makes even more sense why Lue should choose the former Cavalier.
The problem the Clippers have had with Dunn is that, even though he can contribute in various areas, he can be easily played off the court. Why? If his shots aren’t falling, he is basically a liability.
With Strus, Lue and the coaching staff won’t have to worry about him becoming a non-factor.
That said, when taking everything into account, Lue’s best bet to start the season is to start Strus and bring Dunn off the bench. A change can always be made, but for now, this is the way to go.
