For many first or second options across the NBA, a handful of variables determine their success on the court. Some need additional star help to make their lives easier, or a teammate with whom they have excellent chemistry, while others thrive off plays and an offense built around their abilities. These are all normal.
For Brandon Ingram, a two-time All-Star and one of the LA Clippers’ primary scorers, the key to success is extremely simple. It all comes down to floor spacing. Why is that? Ingram can score at all three levels, but specifically loves the mid-range. This requires a certain level of room to operate inside the three-point line.
So, for him to succeed, head coach Tyronn Lue would have to surround him with nothing but guys that can shoot the lights out of the arena on a regular basis. And, honestly, that won’t be a difficult task for Lue.
Brandon Ingram needs floor spacing, and he’s in the perfect place with the LA Clippers
A lot of teams in the league can't match the LA Clippers' strength of three-point shooting. The Clippers came a long way from last season, when they struggled from beyond the arc, particularly in getting shots off, but now it’s pretty clear they have some of the best spacing in the league.
That sure sounds like music to Brandon Ingram’s ears, especially because he may be trying to prove himself for a long-term extension with the Clippers.
In the starting lineup, Ingram will likely have Darius Garland (43.8% from three last season), Kris Dunn (37.4% from three last season), Rui Hachimura (44.3% from three last season, and Brook Lopez (36.0% from three last season).
Being surrounded by guys in the projected starting lineup who can shoot above average from a distance will give Ingram the space he needs to get to his sweet spots, create in isolation, and score easy baskets.
In the event Tyronn Lue makes substitutions around Ingram, that’s not a problem. Bradley Beal, Kobe Sanders, Derrick Jones Jr., and Max Strus are also not players that can be left open from three. If they are, there is no doubt they will make opponents pay.
The Clippers' current structure is tailor-made to Ingram’s strengths. All he really has to do is stay relatively healthy (he is coming off a career high of 77 games played), and it’s inevitable he will achieve success.
