Regarding the cap circumvention investigation Kawhi Leonard is under, a lot of people are hopeful it’ll go through. The fans most definitely are, as everyone is excited about the new-era LA Clippers, and the front office has a valid enough reason to be as well, given that an eventful chapter will finally be put behind them.
However, above everyone mentioned above is Gradey Dick, the 2023 13th overall pick. Why? Well, not only will the Clippers be a much-needed change of scenery for Dick, but it’ll also be a golden opportunity to prove to the Toronto Raptors they messed up big time by trading him away.
If the trade is deemed unsuccessful, he’ll have to go back to the Raptors, which is a situation he may not want to be in, and one that he likely won’t be able to get out of until the mid-season trade window opens up.
Hence, Dick is probably hoping for the best possible outcome for the Clippers and Raptors more than anyone.
Gradey Dick needs the offseason blockbuster trade to go through
Over the course of his first two seasons in the league, Gradey Dick was nothing short of promising. His minutes increased, and with that, as fans of the Toronto Raptors wanted, Dick’s points, rebounds, assists, and shot volume improved as well.
Often, when young players see a bump in playing time, their efficiency drops, but with Dick, everything stayed in the same ballpark.
Unfortunately for Dick, in his third year, the Raptors’ coaching staff noticed flaws in his game on both sides of the ball. And with other young players in Toronto's system on the come-up, his role was ultimately lessened.
Dick went from a sure starter in the Raptors’ rotation as a sophomore to starting only once in 76 games in year three, with a minutes average of just 14.0.
And, instead of banking on a bounce-back year four, as some front offices would, considering a lottery pick was used on him, the Raptors traded the 22-year-old when the opportunity came up.
So, of course, Dick is at the top of the list of those who absolutely need the Kawhi Leonard trade to successfully go through.
Dick now has a chip on his shoulder, and with a new system, coaching staff, and role, he is ready to show the Raptors’ front office a lesson they won’t be able to forget about.
