On ‘The Stein Line’, it was reported that “there is growing anticipation in numerous front offices” that a combination, or in an even shocking manner, all three of Kawhi Leonard, LeBron James, and Giannis Antetokounmpo could soon be in a new home. This means they could scatter around the league on their own and try to win a ring in their 30s and, for James, early 40s. In the same breath, the opportunity to join forces would be wide open.
However, the strategy of combining their talents to build a superteam is severely outdated. Championship organizations have, for years now, only won after building a durable core from the ground up, particularly through the draft and signings/trades for young assets.
So, it would shake the league if Leonard, James, and Antetokounmpo were in the same threads, but to a certain degree, it would make sense.
Teaming up may be Kawhi’s best bet to winning in the modern era
The league is now in the hands of the youngsters and squads that have built a dominant foundation. The Oklahoma City Thunder have been the first seed in the Western Conference for the third year in a row now, and on top of that, teams like the San Antonio Spurs, Detroit Pistons, Denver Nuggets, and Boston Celtics are everyone’s top competition.
Though when taking into account the age of Kawhi Leonard(34), LeBron James(41), and Giannis Antetokounmpo(31), who is in a situation with the Milwaukee Bucks that’s been on the verge of falling apart for months, the brighter, more logical idea seems to be to create a superstar trio.
Leonard, specifically, will be 35 over the summer. While he's still playing at a high level, a decline is inevitable, and there isn’t a whole lot of time before it happens.
To maximize the years of greatness he has left, it would be extremely wise for him to invest time and effort into co-existing with two other former MVPs and champions to take down the best of the best.
In fact, this offseason is a golden opportunity, if anything. It could also easily happen with Leonard and Antetokounmpo being the top stars on the trade market, and James being an unrestricted free agent with the freedom to sign where he pleases.
That said, the team-up may seem like a stretch at the moment, but it’s most definitely realistic, especially if Leonard and James meet Antetokounmpo in Cancun earlier than expected.
