Though his stint in LA did not extend to two full seasons, former MVP Russell Westbrook gave Clipper Nation some iconic, cherishable memories. He was elite in the 2023 playoffs and won with grit, hard work, and hustle.
However, the Clippers' system gravitated around three superstar scorers, forcing head coach Tyronn Lue to limit his minutes. Additionally, teams were eager to expose his poor shooting and fast-paced playstyle.
This is what happened in the 2024 series versus the Dallas Mavericks, as Westbrook played 19.0 minutes and averaged 6.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.7 assists. These numbers are horrific for a nine-time All-Star, and the worst part is his efficiencies and turnovers did not help.
Westbrook shot 29.4% from the floor, 23.5% from a distance, and 61.5% at the line, with 1.7 turnovers.
Furthermore, the LA Clippers' front office thought Westbrook could not contribute to the playoffs and traded him to the Utah Jazz, where he was bought out and signed by the Denver Nuggets to assist a three-time MVP.
Turn the clock to the next postseason, and Westbrook is battling against the Clippers in the first round. He evidently has a chip on his shoulder, and based on what he did in game one, LA is regretful for impatiently moving on.
Russell Westbrook's game one performance proved he was not the problem; it was the way he was utilized
As it is not easy to be on the opposing sidelines of the team that traded you, Russell Westbrook set aside his emotions and made impactful plays for the Denver Nuggets.
In addition to being crowned with victory, Westbrook posted 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals in 34 minutes. He also drained two three-pointers in six attempts.
Moreover, one of his three-pointers was the most clutch shot of the day for the Nuggets. It was fired from the corner with 24 seconds left, raising the lead to two, which James Harden tied to force overtime.
Though he only scored one point in overtime, Westbrook crashed the paint for two crucial offensive rebounds, soaking the clock and giving Denver another chance to score. In this game, the two-time scoring champion became the point guard to make the most clutch baskets in league history.
That said, Westbrook's reign on the other side to essentially win the ball game for the Nuggets hurts the Clippers, as their regret for dumping him increased considerably.
