The last straw in Jamahl Mosley’s tenure with the Orlando Magic was blowing a 3-1 lead to the Detroit Pistons in the first round. Once this happened, they let Mosley go at the next available opportunity. As a result, they have a vacant position on the sidelines that needs to be filled immediately, and one of the fits they’re most interested in is Jeff Van Gundy, as reported by Jake Fischer of ‘The Stein Line.’
This is a heartbreaking update. It was common knowledge that Van Gundy wouldn’t be with LA forever, considering how great he is, and that someone would eventually offer him a massive check to coach them, but fans certainly hoped he would stick around, at least for the next few seasons, to guide the new-era Clippers.
At the end of the day, the NBA is a business, and if Van Gundy is offered a promotion he deserves following years of excellence with the Clippers, fans should be happy for him, even though it’ll sting not having him by Tyronn Lue’s side.
Despite fans not wanting him gone, Van Gundy is a great candidate for Orlando
Throughout the entire LA Clippers’ side of town, Jeff Van Gundy is cherished. Everyone knows his value to the team, and from a bird’s eye view, he’s certainly one of the primary reasons why the Clippers have been successful as a franchise over the last few seasons.
From defense to offense to everything in between, Van Gundy is a guru at it all and can single-handedly shift the trajectory of a team.
Unfortunately for Clippers fans, that’s also what makes him perfect for the job the Orlando Magic have open, which explains their reported interest.
In fact, they need someone to step up to the plate and orchestrate a game plan that brings the most out of the stars, like Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, as well as the high-end role players, and young talent the front offices continue to find, especially in the playoffs.
Part of the reason Jamahl Moseley was fired was that he failed in doing so; he lost in the first round three consecutive times.
On top of Van Gundy’s strengths matching with Orlando, he has ties to the organization: Stan Van Gundy, his brother, coached the Magic from 2007 to 2012.
That said, all good things come to an end one way or another, and although Van Gundy was great for LA, and no matter where he ends up, Clipper Nation will always root for him.
