Clippers old habits could easily return in the summer with aging superstar

It's not a good idea.

With a history of making moves for big names, and Lawrence Frank(the man who’s done it all) still in office, the LA Clippers could turn the clock backward this summer and trade for a scorching hot, trending superstar: Kevin Durant. Clipper Nation would certainly be opposed to it, given the number of times these types of experiments have failed, yet it could definitely be in the cards for Kawhi Leonard’s last year on the books.

While Durant is a household name, at 37 years old and turning 38 in September, and is coming off a season averaging an efficient 26 a night over 78 games, he’s not worth making a splash for.

Instead, the front office is better off accepting the fact that the era with Leonard just wasn’t meant to work out, trading him, and moving on to bigger and better things.

The Clippers would set the franchise back much further by trading for KD

Before the thought of making a hunt for Kevin Durant even pops up within the LA Clippers’ organization, they must consider how no justice has been done to the state of the franchise over the years.

They already did terribly by losing a haul of picks and a superstar in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and then, on top of that, made a number of careless decisions, like drafting Jerome Robinson in the lottery, showing priority to John Wall over a 23-year-old Isaiah Hartenstein, and giving up on Moussa Diabate with no hesitation.

Had just some of these gone differently, the Clippers would be one of the few organizations ahead of their time, but because they didn’t, LA is in a position where they’re trying their best just to keep up.

Bringing in Durant might seem smart on paper, but in the end, the Clippers will realize he dragged the franchise deeper into the mud because of his age, the cost to acquire him, and his injury history.

Additionally, with little time left on Leonard’s contract and Durant’s player-option for 2027-28, their pairing could end up being a one-year rental. This makes the idea even worse, which should push Frank toward staying away from the two-time champion over the summer.

That said, it’s completely senseless to pursue Durant. In the event Lawrence Frank does so anyway, Clipper Nation will be confirmed that the team is stuck on not letting go of the era with Leonard, even though it’s long overdue.
