Throughout the NBA over the years, NBA executives and front offices have ordered success from head coaches, especially on playoff-contending rosters. The ideology is that failure, such as missing the playoffs or an early exit, should not happen if the system is constructed well with a combination of role players and superstars.
Unfortunately, many circumstances chip into action that may adjust winning on a legitimate roster. The LA Clippers previously went through this process with Doc Rivers, and other contenders like the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers have followed along.
Furthermore, this season has been historical regarding franchises have let go of quality, proven coaches. This is mind-boggling as several of these teams have made the postseason within the last two seasons.
Just after Christmas, the Sacramento Kings fired Mike Brown, who led a turnaround in culture for players and fans. Months later, on March 28th, the Memphis Grizzlies, one of the top seeds in the Western Conference, moved on from Taylor Jenkins. These were two crucial decisions that confused the NBA community.
More recently, the Denver Nuggets dismissed Michael Malone, who had won 471 regular-season games and 44 playoff games, including the 2023 NBA Finals.
With coaches being dropped like flies, the Clippers have to evaluate Tyronn Lue and what he has accomplished in his primary role.
The LA Clippers' front office may have Tyronn Lue in the hot seat
Although a criteria is not used to measure head coaches' success, Tyronn Lue has not been past the Western Conference Finals in 2021. Sure, he has made the playoffs in all but one season(2021-22), yet Lue has orchestrated around nothing top-20 talents.
Unavoidable injuries may favor his case, as Kawhi Leonard and Paul George have recorded a ridiculous number of absences. A coach can only do so much when his main guys are not in the lineup.
Conversely, Lue is likely one more shortcoming away from being let go. This may be more related to rebuilding than his abilities and resume as a head coach.
Additionally, Lue has not been great in development. He is expected to win while working to prosper young talent, but he has held back numerous players from their true potential.
Nonetheless, after this postseason, team executives must question whether Lue is the guy to get his squad into the NBA Finals or if there is another candidate who can overcome the highly overdue hurdle.
