A couple of years ago, in 2024, if the LA Clippers had called the Washington Wizards to inquire about the asking price for Bilal Coulibaly, they would’ve been told he was untouchable. That’s fair, considering Coulibaly had an exceptional rookie season, then proceeded to average double figures as a sophomore. However, now, a lot has changed. His offensive limitations, particularly in long-range shooting and half-court playmaking, have become evident, making him a buy-low target.
Despite Coulibaly’s flaws, though, the Clippers should contact the Wizards to send over a minimal package. This is primarily because of how great a defender he is, which would complement Darius Garland extremely well.
Lawrence Frank could realistically send over someone like Kris Dunn, and attach a second-round pick, if needed, to get the deal done. The Wizards agree to this with no hesitation, as their priorities have shifted towards players like AJ Dybantsa, Alex Sarr, Trae Young, Kyshawn George, and Anthony Davis.
Bilal Coulibaly is perfect for the LA Clippers’ backcourt
While Bilal Coulibaly isn’t even regarded as an average three-point shooter in the NBA, with a career 31.3% from a distance, he’s still an exceptional defender the LA Clippers need.
He’s coming off his third season in the league where he averaged 1.3 steals and 1.0 blocks, and beyond the stats, Coulibaly’s instincts, IQ, quick hands, active feet, and overall length are one-of-one.
He’s legitimately one of the best wing defenders there is. If he played at least 65 games in any one of his three seasons so far, there is no doubt he’d be in the conversation for All-Defensive honors.
Off first glance, Coulibaly looks like a great fit in the Clippers’ system. He would do Darius Garland a massive favor in the backcourt every time he suits up, and off the bench, Lue could plug-and-play him wherever he’s needed.
In addition, Coulibaly is only 22 years old. This means he matches the Clippers' current youth movement and suggests he has ample time to develop his game on the offensive side of the ball.
Trading for Coulibaly a win-win for the Clippers' organization, no matter how you look at it.
That said, Coulibaly is someone Lawrence Frank and the Clippers’ front office needs to call the Washington Wizards about before training camp kicks off. He has the potential to make a positive impact now, and an even stronger one years down the road.
